Ready to build on your pottery skills and try something a little more challenging?

This six-week course is for anyone who has already learnt the basics of throwing and wants to develop their skills further. We’ll explore new shapes and techniques, improve your confidence on the wheel and give you the chance to work on a project of your own.

We’ll meet every Monday at 6pm for six weeks, giving you the chance to build your skills week by week in a relaxed and supportive environment.

What You’ll Learn on the Course

Week 1 – Back to basics & new forms
We’ll start with a quick reminder of the basics of throwing on the wheel to get everyone warmed up. You’ll then have a go at making more interesting shapes, including bellied-out and collared forms such as vases.

Week 2 – Making plates
This session you will focus on throwing plates and working on wider, flatter forms.

Week 3 – Trimming & handles
This week, we’ll look at trimming – the process of refining your pottery once it has dried slightly, removing excess clay and shaping the base to give your piece a neat, finished look. You’ll also learn how to make and attach handles.

Week 4 – Your own project
Have something you’ve always wanted to make? Bring your idea along and get guidance and support on how to make it. This is your chance to get creative and work on something that interests you.

Week 5 – Trimming your project
We’ll continue with the pieces from Week 4, trimming and refining them by removing excess clay and shaping the base, ready for their final finish.

Week 6 – Glazing & decorating
In our final week, we’ll glaze and decorate your pieces, adding your own colour and finishing touches.

Is this course for me?

This course is ideal if you’ve already completed a beginner’s pottery course or have some experience throwing on the wheel. You should be comfortable with the basics, such as centring, opening up and pulling up the clay.

Elizabeth is an accomplished wheel thrower whose creative background spans floristry, fashion and costume, as well as education. Her varied experience brings a unique combination of technical skill, creativity and an exceptional eye for detail to her ceramics practice.

Elizabeth is passionate about helping potters develop their own skills and creative voice. Her practice explores refined shapes, functional design and the development of her own glazes, always considering how a finished piece feels in the hand and works in everyday life.

What you’ll need

• Clothes you don’t mind getting messy

• Long hair tied back, short nails and no precious jewellery

• An Apron

• A towel you don’t mind getting messy

• Please allow 4-6 weeks for your work to be fired and ready for collection.

Booking Terms

Courses are non-refundable. As a small independent studio, your space is reserved exclusively for you once booked.

If you need to reschedule with more than 3 weeks’ notice, we will re-list your space. If it is successfully filled, you may move to a new course date. If it is not rebooked, rescheduling won’t be possible — however, you are welcome to pass your place on to a friend.
